The pea coat. Six buttons, a tailored collar, a straight cut. On the surface, nothing could be simpler. And yet, no coat has this immediate presence, this natural authority. The pea coat doesn't try to impress — it impresses because it doesn't try.

Origins in the Navy

The pea coat — or "caban" in French — was born on warships. Sailors of the Royal Navy and later the French Navy wore it to face the wind and sea spray. The thick, felted wool naturally repelled moisture. The short cut allowed climbing the shrouds without getting tangled. The buttons, large and widely spaced, could be grasped with wet, frozen gloves.

The tailored collar, that large collar that stands up and buttons to the side, is the pea coat's signature. It protects the neck from the wind without suffocating, frames the face, and gives that distinctive look — both martial and elegant.

The Pea Coat Today

A pea coat is chosen for its cut: straight, without excess volume, shoulders crisp. The ideal length covers the hips without going lower — this is what distinguishes the pea coat from the overcoat. The fabric is everything. A pea coat in felted wool stays true to the original. A pea coat in cashmere is a different experience — lighter, more fluid, it wears like a thick jacket rather than a coat. At Coulange, each pea coat is crafted in our workshops with a lifetime guarantee — because this is the kind of coat you keep for a lifetime.
