A quality coat is recognisable at first glance and first touch. Here are the 6 unmistakable signs, according to Coulange workshop standards.
1. The fabric
A beautiful coat starts with a beautiful fabric. Run your hand over the surface: a quality wool is dense, supple, and springs back under your fingers. Check the label — look for pure virgin wool, cashmere, or long-fibre cotton.
2. The lining
A quality lining isn't an afterthought. It is sewn with the same care as the exterior, often in cupro or viscose — breathable materials that don't trap moisture.
3. The seams
Turn the coat inside out. Straight seams, tight stitches, no loose threads: these are the hallmark of a garment that will last.
4. The buttons
Genuine horn or corozo buttons, sewn by hand with a shank. Not glued plastic. At Coulange, every button is stitched individually.
5. The buttonholes
They should be opened with scissors, one by one — not machine-cut. A clean, dense buttonhole is the sign of artisanal finishing.
6. The cut
A quality coat falls naturally. It's neither stiff nor shapeless. Try it on, move around: the shoulders shouldn't pull, the back shouldn't crease. A well-cut coat is comfortable from the very first wear.
At Coulange 1918, these six signs are not optional — they are our standard. Discover our collection of coats and jackets, crafted in our French workshops.
