The safari jacket moves through the eras without ever losing its luster. An emblematic piece of both the women’s and the men’s wardrobe, it embodies utilitarian elegance: a garment that unites function and form, military rigor and contemporary fluidity. At Coulange, it is a signature.
A story born in the desert
The safari jacket has its origins in the colonial uniforms of the early 20th century. Designed for officers stationed in arid regions, it was distinguished by four patch pockets, an adjustable belt and a generous cut. The fabric was light yet hard-wearing, often linen or a heavy cotton.
In the 1960s, Yves Saint Laurent brought it into civilian fashion. He made it a centerpiece and revealed its full aesthetic potential. Since then, it has never left the runways or the wardrobes.
How to wear the safari jacket today
For women, wear the women’s safari jacket over raw denim jeans and a white T-shirt. Over a flowing dress, it creates a contrast of textures that defines the whole look. For men, it is worn like a jacket: over chinos and an Oxford shirt, the men’s safari jacket is a fine replacement for the blazer. At Coulange, every safari jacket is cut and assembled in our workshop, in France, in noble materials: French linen, long-staple cotton, exceptional cashmere.
